STAMP ISSUE “450^th ANNIVERSARY OF MACAU HOLY HOUSE OF MERCY”

The Macau Holy House of Mercy was founded in 1569 by D. Belchior Carneiro, regarded as Macao’s first bishop, one year after he first set foot on this territory and even before this town’s first local government body, the Senado, was established. It was the earliest Portuguese-inspired institution set up in Macao, guided by the main objective behind its foundation: to give help to the needy.

Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau will issue the stamp theme “450^th Anniversary of Macau Holy House of Mercy” on 15^th May, 2019, to celebrate this noble and meaningful date.

This issue includes a set of four stamps and one souvenir sheet, the stamps illustrate the present facilities include: Nossa Senhora da Misericórdia Home for the Elderly; Bilingual Creche caring for children; Rehabilitation Centre for the Blind, the only one in Macao; the old Asylum of Santa Casa, in São Lazarus neighbourhood. The souvenir sheet illustrates the Museum Nucleus at the Fraternity’s classified main-building in the Historical Centre, and shows the rich collection of Arte Sacra, including items bearing witness to the presence of the Jesuits in China and in the East, as well as other marking the Fraternity’s centuries-old history.

The above issue will be available for sale at the General Post Office and the Communications Museum, from 9:00a.m. to 5:30p.m., the “Rua do Campo” Post Office, from 9:00a.m. to 7:00p.m., the Maritime Ferry Terminal Post Office, from 11:00a.m. to 6:00p.m., and the Airport Post Office, from 10:00a.m. to 7:00p.m. The mail service for the relative philatelic products cancelled with the commemorative postmark will be available on the issue date at the above locations. The stamp designer of this issue is Mr. Lok Chong, and the text of the information brochure is written by the Macau Holy House of Mercy.

This is the fifth theme in 2019.
