STAMP ISSUE “COURT BUILDINGS”

Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau will issue the stamp theme “Court Buildings” on 13^th September, 2019, it is a celebration of the effective implementation of the Macao SAR’s judicial system under the framework of the Basic Law of the Macao Special Administrative Region, and depicts the course of development of the courts as Macao’s judicial organs amidst the social changes in the past two decades.

This issue includes a set of two stamps and one souvenir sheet, the stamp images are illustrated the buildings of the “Court of Final Appeal and Court of Appeal Building” and the “Base Court Criminal Building”. The souvenir sheet is illustrated the “Old Base Court Building located at Avenida da Praia Grande (Nam Van)”, in accordance with the “Cultural Heritage Protection Law”, this building is classified as a “building of architectural interest”.

The development and evolution of the courts over the two decades could be traced to the changes in their buildings. The Old Court Building located at Avenida da Praia Grande (Nam Van) had already been used as a courthouse before Macao returned to China, and remained in service for the Base Court in the early days of the reunification. However, with economic and societal changes, the Base Court moved out in 2003 considering the insufficient space of the Building. Up till 2017, the number of cases received by the Base Court rose threefold compared to the early period of the reunification; to cater for the heavy workload, the Base Court Criminal Building was put into use in 2017. Completed in 1999, the Court of Final Appeal and the Court of Appeal Building has been operating since then.

The above issue will be available for sale at the General Post Office and the Communications Museum, from 9:00a.m. to 5:30p.m., the “Rua do Campo” Post Office, from 9:00a.m. to 7:00p.m., the Maritime Ferry Terminal Post Office, from 11:00a.m. to 6:00p.m., and the Airport Post Office, from 10:00a.m. to 7:00p.m. The mail service for the relative philatelic products cancelled with the commemorative postmark will be available on the issue date at the above locations. The stamp designer of this issue is Mr. Lio Man Cheong, and the text of the information brochure is written by the Office of the President of the Court of Final Appeal of the Macao Special Administrative Region.
